…RESULTS OF THE CANTON DAMAGE SURVEY…

ON FRIDAY AFTERNOON…STAFF FROM THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN
FORT WORTH SURVEYED THE DAMAGE AREAS IN CANTON. BASED ON
EYEWITNESS ACCOUNTS AND CHARACTERISTICS OF THE DAMAGE PATH…IT
WAS DETERMINED THAT A TORNADO OCCURRED.

THE FIRST DAMAGE WAS OBSERVED AT A PARK NEAR HIGHWAY 64 AND OLD
KAUFMAN ROAD. SEVERAL TREES WERE DAMAGED…A POWER POLE WAS BROKEN…
AND FENCING WAS BLOWN DOWN. EAST OF THE PARK…TWO POWER POLES
WERE BROKEN ALONG HIGHWAY 64. A MOBILE HOME NORTHEAST OF THE
POWER POLES SUFFERED MINOR ROOF DAMAGE AND DAMAGE TO A SHED.

THE TORNADO THEN APPROACHED AND MOVED THROUGH THE FIRST MONDAY
GROUNDS. SEVERAL LARGE TREES WERE HEAVILY DAMAGED AND A CAMPER
TRAILER WAS PUSHED OVER IN THE WESTERN PART OF THE GROUNDS. SEVERAL
VEHICLES WERE DAMAGED BY THE FALLING TREES AND LIMBS. AS THE TORNADO
APPROACHED HIGHWAY 19…ADDITIONAL TREES WERE DAMAGED. THE DAMAGE
SWATH ENDED ROUGHLY 200 YARDS EAST OF HIGHWAY 19.

BASED ON THE TREE AND POWER POLE DAMAGE…AND THE RELATIVE LACK OF
DAMAGE TO PERMANENT STRUCTURES…THIS TORNADO IS GIVEN A
PRELIMINARY RATING OF LOW EF-1 ON THE ENHANCED FUJITA SCALE.
MAXIMUM WIND SPEEDS WERE LIKELY IN THE 85-90 MPH RANGE. PATH LENGTH
WAS ROUGHLY 1.3 MILES AND THE AVERAGE PATH WIDTH WAS APPROXIMATELY
75 YARDS.

IT WAS FORTUNATE THAT THIS TORNADO DID NOT FALL INTO THE STRONG OR
VIOLENT CATEGORY. HAD IT DONE SO…THE IMPACTS UNDOUBTEDLY WOULD
HAVE BEEN MUCH MORE SIGNIFICANT.
