...JULY 2006 MONTHLY SUMMARY...

...THE DROUGHT CONTINUES ACROSS OKLAHOMA AND WESTERN NORTH TEXAS...

FOR OKLAHOMA CITY:

TOP-TEN RECORD WARMTH REMAINED ANCHORED DURING THE MUCH OF JULY.
TEMPERATURES THIS MONTH WARMED TO READINGS THAT HAVEN'T BEEN FELT IN
A FEW YEARS. THE HOTTEST TEMPERATURE WAS 107 DEGREES...WHICH WAS
REACHED TWICE ON THE 19TH AND 20TH. THE TEMPERATURE ON THE 20TH TIED
A RECORD HIGH FOR THE DATE. OKLAHOMA CITY HAS NOT REACHED 107
DEGREES SINCE JULY 12TH 2001.

ONE-HUNDRED DEGREES WAS REACHED OR EXCEEDED 16 TIMES...WITH NINE
CONSECUTIVE FROM THE 13TH THROUGH THE 21ST. THE 100-DEGREE MARK WAS
REACHED 16 TIMES IN JULY... WHICH IS FOUR TIMES MORE THAN THE
AVERAGE TOTAL. THE TOTAL NUMBER OF DAYS THAT HAVE REACHED OR
EXCEEDED 100-DEGREES IS NOW 18. THE LAST TIME THAT WE HAD THIS MANY
100-DEGREE DAYS WAS IN 2003. HOWEVER...WITH HALF OF THE SUMMER LEFT
WE ARE SURE TO ECLIPSE THAT TOTAL. ALTHOUGH THIS TOTAL SEEMS HIGH...
THE HIGHEST TOTAL WAS SET DURING THE SUMMER OF 1980...WHEN THE
TEMPERATURE ROSE ABOVE 100-DEGREES 50 TIMES. THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE
THIS MONTH WAS 86.2 DEGREES...WHICH IS THE 8TH WARMEST ON RECORD.
BELOW IS A TABLE OF THE TOP-TEN WARMEST JULY MONTHS:

RANK YEAR AVERAGE TEMPERATURE
1 1934(T) 88.3
1980
3 1998 88.0
4 1954 87.4
5 1978 87.0
6 1936 86.7
7 1966 86.4
8 2006 86.2
9 1986 85.9
10 2001 86.2

EVEN WITH ALL THE VERY HOT TEMPERATURES EXPERIENCED ON MOST DAYS...
THERE WERE A FEW PERIODS OF "RELIEF." A COLD FRONT THAT MOVED
THROUGH THE STATE IN EARLY JULY DROPPED THE LOW TEMPERATURE ON THE
EIGHTH TO A COOL 61 DEGREES. ANOTHER COLD FRONT MOVED THROUGH THE
STATE DURING THE AFTERNOON OF THE 21ST. THE TEMPERATURES ON THE 22ND
AND 23RD WERE "ONLY" 93 DEGREES...WHICH IS THE NORMAL TEMPERATURE
FOR THOSE DATES. FIVE DAYS OF THE MONTH HAD BELOW NORMAL
TEMPERATURES...IF ONLY BY A DEGREE OR TWO.

EVEN THOUGH THE DROUGHT IS ONGOING ACROSS THE STATE... JULY ACTUALLY
HAD THE RARE OCCURRENCE THIS YEAR OF BEING ABOVE NORMAL FOR
PRECIPITATION. THE TOTAL FOR THE MONTH WAS 3.42 INCHES... WHICH IS
0.48 INCHES ABOVE NORMAL. UNFORTUNATELY THE TREND OF PROLONGED
STRETCHES OF ZERO RAINFALL CONTINUED. AFTER 0.04 INCHES FELL ON THE
13TH...THE NEXT RAINFALL OCCURRED TWO WEEKS LATER ON THE 27TH. THE
TOTAL PRECIPITATION THROUGH JULY IS NOW 15.06 INCHES... 6.69 INCHES
BELOW NORMAL. SINCE JANUARY 2005...OKLAHOMA CITY HAS RECEIVED 38.66
INCHES...OR 18.94 INCHES BELOW NORMAL.

FOR WICHITA FALLS:

THE HEAT WAS DEFINITELY ON AT WICHITA FALLS THIS MONTH. AIR
CONDITIONERS WERE RUNNING NON-STOP AS THE TEMPERATURE REACHED
100-DEGREES ON 21 OF THE 31 DAYS. FROM THE 10TH THROUGH THE 21ST...
THE HIGH TEMPERATURE WAS AT LEAST 103 DEGREES. FOUR TIMES DURING
THAT STRETCH THE TEMPERATURE REACHED 108 DEGREES. THE HOTTEST
TEMPERATURE OF 109 DEGREES OCCURRED ON THE 18TH WHICH WAS A RECORD
FOR THE DATE. WHILE THE 100-DEGREE DAY TOTAL SEEMS HIGH... CONSIDER
THIS... THERE HAVE BEEN AT LEAST TEN YEARS WHERE THE TEMPERATURE
ROSE ABOVE 100-DEGREES 50 TIMES...WITH THE HIGHEST TOTAL OCCURRING
IN 1980 WITH 79 DAYS.

THE AVERAGE HIGH TEMPERATURE WAS 102 DEGREES...WHICH IS ALMOST FIVE
DEGREES ABOVE NORMAL. THE AVERAGE LOW TEMPERATURE WAS 74.8
DEGREES...WHICH WAS ALSO ABOVE NORMAL BY 2.4 DEGREES. THE COMBINED
AVERAGE TEMPERATURE FOR THE MONTH WAS 88.4 DEGREES...TYING THE MARK
FOR TENTH WARMEST ON RECORD. BELOW IS A TABLE OF THE TOP-TEN WARMEST
JULY MONTHS:

RANK YEAR AVERAGE TEMPERATURE
1 1980 91.9
2 2001 90.0
3 1978 89.9
4 1934 89.8
5 1954 89.4
6 1925(T) 89.3
1998
8 1969 88.8
9 1964 88.7
10 1939(T) 88.4
2006

THE NORMAL PRECIPITATION WAS SUPPOSED TO BE AROUND 1.58 INCHES. THE
ACTUAL TOTAL FOR THE MONTH WAS 0.09 INCHES. PRECIPITATION WAS
ACTUALLY RECORDED ON EIGHT DAYS...BUT SEVEN OF THOSE WERE ONLY A
TRACE. HAD IT NOT BEEN FOR A STRAY THUNDERSTORM ON THE 28TH...ONLY A
TRACE WOULD HAVE BEEN RECORD. THE PRECIPITATION TOTAL MAKES FOR THE
EIGHTH DRIEST JULY ON RECORD. BELOW IS A TABLE OF THE TOP-TEN DRIEST
JULY MONTHS:

RANK YEAR TOTAL
1 2003 0.00
2 1943(T) TRACE
1999
2001
5 1903(T) 0.03
1980
7 1934 0.06
8 2006 0.09
9 1970 0.10
10 1997 0.11

TEMPERATURE AND PRECIPITATION RECORDS FOR OKLAHOMA CITY GO BACK TO
1891. TEMPERATURE RECORDS FOR WICHITA FALLS GO BACK TO 1924 AND
